Satisfy My Needs

Proverbs 30:8"First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs."

Have you ever thought about the difference between 'needs' and 'wants'?  I always thought that I had the grasp of both
meanings well placed in my mind.  However, since the tornadoes here in Alabama causing such devastation, those two words have really been in my spirit.

Webster's defines 'want' as "to desire; to have an inclination toward; like", and 'need' as "to be necessary; the essentials of life; anything that is necessary but lacking."

When I go to the grocery store, I have a list of our 'needs', i.e. cookies, Pepsi's, etc. ..... yeah, right !!!  Talk about 'needs', look at any of the lists on most news websites and you'll see:  medical supplies -i.e. Tylenol, Band-aids, bug spray, Neosporin; non-perishable foods; BABY items -i.e. formula, baby food, and diapers, etc.  Now, for folks who have lost everything, there are REAL 'needs'.

Sometimes things happen which make us reevaluate our own lives and motives, and that's a good thing for us, but really sad if it involves loss for others.  Anyway, the next time I say, "I need some Pepsi", it'll make me stop and think.

Hope you have a great day, filled with the acquisition of all your needs, and with your receiving some 'wants', too. Maggie

"He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord. . . ."
Proverbs 19:17

The phone rang one evening; it was a neighbor calling to tell my wife that she had found someone who had 250 basketballs and soccer balls to give away. “Rosie,” she asked, “do you think the ministries that your foundation supports could find a use for these balls?”

“Yes, of course!” Rosie was overjoyed.

The ministries were overjoyed too. For some of the children in their programs, it would be the first time they’d be playing with a new ball. And all of us were touched that our neighbor had gone out of her way to find a donor to provide these balls because she knew that they would be a blessing to the kids.

Even in times of general hardship, there can be a great gap between those who have and those who have not. It makes such a difference when people are concerned enough to see the need in communities that would be easy for them to ignore—and then reach out with the love of God.

Lord, I know in my heart that if I am kind to the poor, You get glory. Help me to be alive to the opportunities to help, which are all around me.
